Assassin's Creed
Adaptations are always slippery slopes, as there are people who want them to be extremely close to the source material, and those who will boycott unless it is exactly like the source material. Having never played Assassin's Creed before (as I don't enjoy playing video games), I can't say that this adaptation is extremely close to the source material, but I can say that this adaptation was terrible. A film should leave a viewer not having to ask questions, being able to watch the film without having to really think about basic plot points. Throughout the entire film, I had to look to my friend who had already seen the film to clarify exactly what was going on at times. There were so many parts throughout the film that I ended up having to stop paying close attention to the actual plot and just enjoy the film for the beautiful cinematography. Once you get to that point in a film, it's hard to ever come back from it. In all honesty, I still am not sure exactly what happend in the film's final scenes, as I just stopped really paying attention to what was happening. When this happens, you know the film has major flaws that needed to be addressed much earlier in production. I understand that many people can really understand the film, as they have played the video game and understand the lore behind it all. Having not seen the video games played or personally played them, I felt really detached, like I really shouldn't be the one watching it. This is an adaptation that really is for the people who have played the game, but sadly leaves those who haven't played the game behind. It would have been nice if things had been clearer to fully understand everything that was going on. I went into this film expecting something like Kurzel's Macbeth, a visually stunning film filled with stellar performances. While the scenes in the historical era were just as stunning at times, the scenes in the "real world" were dull and quite frankly boring. It would have been nice to see these scenes that take place in the "real world" have more flair to them, instead of being as boring as some points in the film. Although the film does look visually stunning at times, a good looking film doesn't exactly mean that there is a lot actually going on (see Horsehead for another example of a visually stunning film with a plot that's just as hard to follow at times). Assassin's Creed had the potential to be a fantastic video game adaptation. There are those that are loving the film, and there are those that don't enjoy the film. I myself thought it was entertaining, but there were so many points in the film that I had to ask about that I ended up giving up watching and just watched it for the aesthetic. Maybe if they did a different approach to the series it would be much moe interesting, but this adaptation sadly doesn't resonate with me as much as other video game adaptations. Maybe now that I've seen it I can watch it again and pay a lot more attention and possibly enjoy it more once I actually know what's going on.
