Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Film #14 of June 2017 Scavenger Hunt Task #28: Two Science Fiction Films With Similar Themes So You Can Compare And Contrast Them The underlying question for the theme I focused on was what will happen when extraterrestrials come to Earth? As seen in District 9, the aliens called this planet home, comparing the aliens to the ever-real immigration debate currently going on. In Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the approach is completely different. Instead of the aliens physically coming to Earth, they do the stereotypical "alien" things, like abductions. Spielberg, just coming off of his success in Jaws managed to create another blockbuster that's just as good as his previous feature, while completely changing things up for the plot. Spielberg's early style really starts to show here, seeming to be really similar to his approach in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The first half of the film was the better half, with the second half seeming to lose itself in plot and action. The first half of the film was immaculate, with ever scene being completely engaging. While the second half did slow down a little, it still managed to be an amazing alien film that really paved the road for more science fiction films. The aliens don't do as much on Earth here, compared to what they did in District 9, but they still are up to the same type of things; wanting to examine humanity and investigate what it is to be human.
