The Good Son

The Good Son is not a good film. Not in the slightest. All the makings of a good movie are there. It’s just watered down severely. The production behind the film is actually quite interesting. So, Fox commissioned novelist Ian McEwan to write the screenplay for the film, and the screenplay was good, but it was non-commercial. And to make matters worse, Macaulay Culkin’s father got involved with the production and wanted the script to be reworked as a vehicle for Macaulay to prove he could take on more adult roles. Considering Culkin’s good boy image with films like Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and My Girl, Macaulay seems very miscast as the lead role Henry. He’s supposed to be a disturbed little boy, but he doesn’t really talk like one. His speech, motive, and cleverness are far too sophisticated and ironic for a child, and Culkin’s performance comes off more as a school play performance of Alex from A Clockwork Orange. The score by Elmer Bernstein is good, but some of it is WAAAAY misused. The beginning (e.g., the scene where Mark and his father are driving to Maine) gives off the impression that you’re watching some family movie if you didn’t know what you were watching if you stumbled across this movie for the first time. On a more positive note, Elijah Wood’s performance as Mark is really convincing and carries the entire movie. All in all, had Fox not watered the script down to a Macaulay Culkin’s vehicle, this movie really could’ve been a lot better.
