El Conde
unfortunately I don’t think all the jokes landed for me because of the language/culture barrier, but this was a (mostly) fun time. i love vampires! love!! and their lore (though a bit confusing at times) was pretty interesting. i could watch these little freaks fly through chilean fields forever. if I’m being completely honest, I’m not sure how much of a chance this film stands against its fellow nominees in the cinematography category, but that doesn’t diminish just how gorgeous it was. and vitriolic. it’s all black and white but this has to have some of the grossest gore scenes I’ve seen in a while. put. that. blender. down!!
El Conde
El Conde, the latest film from Pablo Larraín, is a bold film. Larrain has proven himself to be a bold director, but he has yet to craft a film as striking as this. Deciding to direct a satire about the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was a risk. With a subject matter as nuanced as this tackles, in many hands, this would have fallen out of satire and into a disrespectful territory. Luckily, Larraín manages to balance the line between satire and disrespect, crafting a compelling, and quite hilarious, black comedy. This film is not going to be for all audiences, since the subject of Pinochet is a very delicate one, but I thought it to be a very thought-provoking, and entertaining, watch. It’s absurd, while grounding itself in the real-life horrors that Pinochet afflicted. The final act of the film introduces a character that was so left-field I was left speechless. It’s a brilliantly shot film, and was perfectly paced to properly tell this story. I hate that it took me as long as it did to finally watch this film, but I’m glad I did, since it’s my favorite film I’ve seen released this year so far. El Conde shows why Larraín is such an interesting voice within current cinema, and shows why I’m always excited to see what he is going to do next. An absolute home run.
