The Curse
Exactly how i thought this would end
The Curse
Just three episodes in, butTHE CURSEhas a way of crawling under your skin so much it makes me want to rip it off. If anything it’s another example of how comedic actors/directors have an innate knack to extract humor from the darkest aspects of life.
The Curse
A bold, transgressive offering from Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone, The Cursewill remain to be one of the most uniquely uncomfortable experiences I have had the pleasure of witnessing. Created and written by Fielder himself andBenny Safdie, there simply isn’t anything quite like this show on tv, or anywhere really… The Cursemanages to be a variety of things, from a cringe-inducing, pitch-black comedy about the hilarious self-importance of its characters, to this dark and disturbing exploration of faith, reality as an infinitely malleable object and ultimately what is a self-fulfilling prophecy. It manages to weave in so many different ideas, themes, and tones it’s generally difficult to place this in one genre. I’m not even sure how to recommend this show to people either - if you enjoy Nathan Fielder’s other works (Nathan For You), you mightenjoy this, but it’s told in such a distinctly different lens than his comical work it might honestly be jarring. This is definitely not a show for everybody, but I see that as a positive. The Curse isn’t afraid to put you in that dreaded uncomfortable space for long stretches of time, but it manages to make me burst out laughing as well - it’s a very careful balance that I haven’t seen done before (this well, at least). 🍅
The Curse
Chicken attacks. Rotten Apples. Exploding cows. Household trauma will literally destroy you from the inside-out. There is no escaping unless you escape town, leave the place from which you came to see that the grass is indeed greener on the other side. That you can find safe parts of yourself. That there are other means of living that you can make for your own. Trauma is contamination. Trauma affects everyone. It blinds you. Sickens you. Destroys. How can we destroy ourselves less? Furthermore, how can we destroy everything around us less?
