Repo! The Genetic Opera
While I don’t think this fully works as a musical (literally every line of dialogue being sung instead of spoken), there are plenty of good things going on here. The costuming, set design, and overall gothic aesthetic is great, as well as the practical effects. I just think this interesting premise would work much better as a non-musical sci-fi/action/thriller. Bonus points for all the graphic novel panels, I would’ve watched the entire story told just through those alone tbh.

I'm honestly surprised it took me this long to watch it. Paris Hilton, Iconic Anthony Head, I love you
Repo! The Genetic Opera
Repo! The Genetic Opera is a messy first attempt at integrating a musical into a genre that really doesn't fit into the stereotypical musical genre. Songs are what make or break a musical, and many of the songs were decent, but there are so many songs throughout the film that are just forgettable, making the film itself forgettable. It's interesting seeing this cast, as many of them come back for Bousman's next musical, The Devil's Carnival. Repo is a first attempt at musicals for Bousman, so hopefully his next musical will build off of this, as well as the other two that he's directed. His films are interesting and visually stimulating, but Repo needed to have better songs to be a good musical.
Repo! The Genetic Opera
the songs go hard. the movie looks like it has a constant gaussian blur filter. the girl from spy kids is there. everything is gothy hot topic vibes. it definitely isn’t great but it’s fun.
