"Hello. My name is Mr. R.L. Stine. Every story ever told can be broken down into three parts. The beginning. The middle. And the twist." Ratbootober Watch #42 (https://letterboxd.com/rottingratcore/list/ratbootober)
Goosebumps
I was expecting a nostalgia filled film that reminds me of my childhood, watching the ever popular television show Goosebumps. Sadly, that's not what was delivered here. I was totally expecting the opening theme to the television show to be the opening to the film. Instead, it was something new and honestly not as interesting. I think if the film started on a different note than it did, this could have been a fantastic film. Jack Black was the wrong man to play author R.L. Stine. He is known as a comedic actor, not a dramatic actor (though I did enjoy him in King Kong). Goosebumps is known for it's horror elements, not comedy. But that seemed like the intention of this film; focus on the comedy and put as little horror elements as possible into it. Thought this is a children's movie, there could have been more "scary" things involved. They did focus on many iconic Goosebumps characters, but they could have done many more interesting characters. I was dying to see Monster Blood, but it made no appearance in this. Say Cheese and Die! happens to be my favorite of the books, but it was only referenced. They could have done some amazing things with the film, but only focused on the things that would make the plot work, instead of showing what Goosebumps truly is. I had high hopes for this, but it lost my interest halfway through. I was hoping for a nostalgia filled joyride, but instead I got a random hodgepodge of characters listening to a ventriloquist dummy.
