Ingrid Goes West
As pitch black a comedy as you can get, Ingrid Goes West is a wild trip into the realm of social media. As a young adult, social media is an integral part of my life. I am constantly on social media, checking up on what my friends are doing, seeing what completely random strangers and celebrities are up to. This gift of social media allows us to express ourselves in unique ways, but also allows people to hide under the veil of anonymity, creating these internet personas that may be partially true to who people are, but certainly aren't who they truly are. Ingrid Goes West takes the concept of social media and creates a captivating and hilariously black comedy depicting obsession on social media. Ingrid, the main character, obsesses over people she discovers on social media, getting to the point of finding them and befriending them. Elizabeth Olsen's character is the newest addition to Ingrid's obsession, creating a dynamic cast that work together to create one interesting and stunning film. There were so many points throughout the film that left you wondering exactly what Ingrid was up to, and creates scenes that are absolutely nervewracking to watch. All of this leads up to an unforgettable ending, an ending that managed to touch me, despite it's grim tone. Ingrid Goes West is one of this year's surprise films, a film that I thought that I wasn't going to enjoy but managed to have an absolute blast watching. Plaza is as captivating as ever, Olsen is as stunning as ever, this film itself is just as entertaining as ever. It would be interesting to see more short films with Ingrid, since another feature length film would be a rehash of the same plot, but shorts would be interesting to see, seeing what Ingrid does with her new found following. While it was awkward at times, Ingrid Goes West is one of this year's best comedies and best done satires, something rare to find in the mainstream film industry these days.
