The Big Sick

Romantic comedies can always be hits and misses. There can be some jokes that are hilarious, while some jokes seem to fall flat, but are forgivable with the quality of the jokes that end up being funny. There are other films that have absolutely no jokes that seem to work, really only relying on sexual jokes to keep the film afloat, while throwing in the romance somewhere in there to make it relatable. The Big Sick is a romantic comedy, but manages to avoid the plethora of sexual jokes to delve into culture and what life is like in the United States. The Big Sick plays like a typical comedy for the first act, setting up some great jokes and some really cheesy but cute romantic moments. It all builds up to, well, what ends up happening to her, sending us into the heartwrenching second act. The second act is where the humanity starts to show up more, where the emotions start getting high. Then it all comes crashing to the final act, where the second act was heartwrenching, the third act seemed to be a punch to the gut. It's full of so many different emotions, making you laugh and cry simultaneously. This range of emotions is devoid in many comedies today, with many romances just having the romance and lacking the comedy that was needed in this story. The Big Sick is this year's surprise rom-com that looks into different cultures, and how they are seen in the United States. There is not much representation for Pakistanis, so this film is eye-opening for the culture there, as well as the reception here in the United States. It's always fascinating to see what people's cultures are like around the world, with this film really showing what the family structure is like and how family is one of the most important aspects of your life. Family is the basis of this film, and it's amazing seeing that this is a true story, with Kumail playing himself and getting to show his life to audiences around the world.

The Big Sick

Unpopular opinion: Kumail Nanjiani should've been nominated for the Oscars. That scene where he got confronted by his parents for not marrying a Muslim completely wrecked me.

The Big Sick

Exposing the rom-com genre on a platter and the next thrusting it towards a refreshing unconventional direction, The Big Sick is Michael Showalter's ever so pleasant and moving drama of cultural differences and relationships seen through the eyes of a Pakistani twenty-something. It's one third of a traditional rom-com infused with a bright stretch of honesty and realness—an infectious type of true story romance, and one that differs from a lot of others. Emotions bubble and the laughs are asserted in, making for a fantastic mix of comedy and drama—one that helps its overall effectiveness. Kumail Nanjiani's presence is both hysterical and powerful, and his story is too. In all honesty, The Big Sick is a too good to be true type of comedy-drama. 4.2/5
