Growing up is forgiving. The loves that falter and fault and shape our morals into some kind of maturity called adulthood. Maybe career really drives us, shapes us into who we should be, as lost as we get through the years and the changing times. There’s a great sequence between TV screens and phone lines: quick cuts with deep focus shots in quippy exchanges of dialogue creates a tragi-comedy talkie that pivots in all directions, stretching adulthood into the complex web we all feared it to be. How to hold back, be the better person, present ourselves with very little faults? Holly Hunter is turbulent, breaking down every so often to cry, to flex the honest reflexivity of the human spirit, and she yearns and pines for the unobtainable. Through all the stress, we breathe very little, catching air only in taxi rides to and from places and in the chill nights when work beckons to end. Brooks presents the newsroom as theater. Stage direction with strict choreography makes this film dance in all the zany 80 corporate havoc that it streamlines.
