The Age of Innocence
This was pretty boring tbh. I liked the outfits and cinematography but the movie was boring. I'm guessing the ending was supposed to be sad but I was too underwhelmed to even find it sad. The acting was good. I felt bad for Winona's character. Movie was still worth a watch but I definitely won't rewatch it.
The Age of Innocence
❝She remained in his memory simply as the most plaintive and poignant of a line of ghosts.❞ · · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · · Hats off to Martin Scorsese; for someone most famous for gritty gangster films, he sure knows how to make a heart-wrenching romance. The film is very faithful to the book, which I always appreciate because it's certainly not easy to translate the source material into another form of media. In my opinion, the pace was very slow to start off with, but really picked up about a third into the film all the way until the end. As a modern watcher it was hard to see the characters bound by the customs and rules of 19th/20th century America; to me the solution to everyone's troubles seemed so simple, but I guess easy solutions wouldn't make for a riveting story. The ending was simultaneously heartbreaking and frustrating, and I shed a few tears for what could have been. I absolutely loved the costumes and sets. They were historically accurate and so detailed; one eye was constantly admiring the ladies' dresses and the interior design of the upper class houses. Despite the bright, jewel-toned palette, the colour grading of the film was surprisingly dim and almost drab, which was interesting. The use of flowers was also very clever: yellow roses sent from Newland to Ellen unfortunately foreshadowed the end of their relationship, while the lilies he sent May symbolised her supposed purity but also his sorrow, first for having to marry her, then foreshadowing again her death. I thought the soundtrack was beautiful and well-chosen, with some particularly gorgeous classical pieces used. The main leads were mostly excellent. Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer had so much chemistry together, and Winona Ryder as May was a little stiff at first, but gradually warmed to her role, to the point where my blood boiled after she told Newland what she had done towards the end. The rest of the cast was good, but no-one really stood out (or were overshadowed by the others). The Age of Innocence was a stunning watch, and definitely one of Scorsese's underrated works.

Damn. What a great fucking movie. Kinda hilarious to see the stoic genre of period yearning romance taken on, but shot and edited so similarly to GOODFELLAS. Obvious credit due to Schoonmaker and Ballhaus for some of that. Pfeiffer never gets enough credit as an actor, her charisma and beauty seem to distract so many from the fact that she’s also a damn goodactor. Marty lets her shine here, and she more than holds her own against DDL, who puts in a characteristically brilliant performance. Great, great movie.

I'd marry Winona Ryder in a heartbeat ROBERT SEAN LEONARD IN THIS ?!?!?!
