The Sisters Brothers
The abruptness of ending threw me off entirely and really ruined what little enjoyment (and i do mean little) I had built up over the last 30 minutes or so. I mean sure, I got Jake and Joaquin in the same movie, but at what cost?
The Sisters Brothers
“You’re not going to like what comes next…” A surprisingly humanistic western focused on the exploits and self destructive nature of men with a caring and kind lens. The Sisters Brothersdoes a wonderful job at vividly showcasing the spectrum of masculinity through our four multifaceted main characters. While the western is ostensibly an American film tradition, it’s been known for its black and white portrayal of good and evil while Italian directors were more interested in blurring these lines. The primary focus was always something rugged and masculine, which is perfectly fine in my eyes (I’m a hug western fan), but The Sisters Brothersdoes manage to upend the genre into a more humane direction. Director Jacques Audiard focuses more on friendship, brotherhood, innocence, and deep rooted insecurities in the face of a violent world. Powerhouse performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Riz Ahmed, John C. Riley, and of course Joaquin Phoenixelevate The Sisters Brothersinto being something really special. Paired with the amazing cinematography by Benoît Debie(Into the Void, Climax) and a ridiculously memorable score by composer Alexandre Desplat makes this film an unforgettable experience from start to finish.
