interesting portrayal of what i thought as nostalgia for the two ends of the american life spectrum; the idyllic american suburb life and the violent, crime riddled slums. and putting slutty kyle maclachlan with his hoop earring in the middle of it was perfect.

Spanish: David Lynch es un director único en su especie. No hay nadie que haga cine como él. Su forma de explorar el subconsciente —a través de imágenes que parecen salidas de un sueño, o más bien una pesadilla— te deja con una sensación muy particular. En Blue Velvet, Lynch se enfoca en esa dualidad entre la belleza superficial y la oscuridad que se esconde detrás. Esa típica apariencia perfecta de los suburbios que, al rasguñar un poco, revela una realidad perturbadora y violenta. Mi favorita sigue siendo Mulholland Drive, que me mantuvo al borde del asiento todo el tiempo. Fue súper misteriosa y tensionante, la edición perfecta, literalmente un mindfuck. La trama fue más intrigante; el ritmo increíble... debo reverla. Y The Elephant Man, que me parece una película hermosísima. :) Eso sí: la fotografía es preciosa. Me encantó todo el setting. Y Frank… una personificación brutal del mal y la locura. Siempre que parecía era todo muy caótico y tensionante, en general todo lo que pasaba en ese apartamento con Dorothy. Ahí se mezclaba lo psicótico con la confusión, la sumisión y la desesperación. Esa obsesión de Jeffrey por descubrir “el misterio”, por mirar más allá de la fachada perfecta, es lo que más me gustó. A pesar de lo hermosamente construida y dirigida, ambientada con canciones divinas, no llegó atraparme del todo en esta primera vista, pero aún tengo muchas ganas de ver Twin Peaks, Lost Highway y más de su filmografía. PD: No la voy a calificar todavía. Siento que es de esas pelis que crecen con el tiempo y merecen una segunda vista. Pero me dejó satisfecho, solo que estoy confundido. (Update: después de meditarlo bastante, considero que es solo buena y la admiro, pero solo eso por ahora. En una segunda vista, veremos cómo me siento al respecto.) --------------------------------------------------------------- English: David Lynch is a one-of-a kind director. No one makes films like he does. His way of exploring the subconscious —through images that feel like they came out of a dream, or rather a nightmare— leaves you with a very particular sensation. In Blue Velvet, Lynch focuses on the duality between superficial beauty and the darkness hiding underneath. That typical perfect suburban appearance which, when scratched just a little, reveals a disturbing and violent reality. My favorite is still Mulholland Drive, which kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was super mysterious and tense, the editing was perfect — literally a mindfuck. I definitely need to rewatch it. And The Elephant Man, which I think is a truly beautiful and heartbreaking film. :) That said, the cinematography in Blue Velvet is gorgeous. I loved the entire setting. And Frank… such a great personification of evil and madness. Everything that happened in that apartment with Dorothy always felt chaotic and intense. There, psychosis blended with confusion, submission, and desperation. Jeffrey’s obsession with uncovering “the mystery,” with looking beyond the perfect facade, was what I liked the most. Despite how beautifully constructed and directed it was —with divine songs enhancing the atmosphere— it didn’t fully grab me on this first watch. Still, I’m really excited to watch Twin Peaks, Lost Highway... and more Lynch's filmography. PS: Not rating it yet. Feels like one of those movies that stick with you and need a second watch. I did enjoy it — just kinda confused right now. (Update: for now, I think it's just good as piece of work and I respect it. On the second watch, let's see how I feel about this rating.)
