The Drama

"Do you live around here?" What do you do when you discover that the person you're about to give your whole life to- had planned a school shooting when they were a teenager? The characters around Emma focus on the 'thought' rather than the 'action'. When Charlie admits to cyberbullying a kid to the point he moved away (whether that's due to his actions or not) is excused by Mike by stating he was just 14 years old. However, in contrast, Emma's thoughts and near action- in which she turned around, and in doing so, went onto advocating gun control- is criminalised by those around her for the preparations she had made. In no way should mass shootings ever be excused, but this movie brings up the importance of highlighting mental health awareness- emphasised by Charlie's monologue. As he said, for the mass shootings that occur every day, there are thousands of people out there who think of it just as much. It's movies like this that remind me why I want to be a Psychologist; There are many people out there struggling with their emotions and thoughts, just like 15 year old Emma. Rachel's character is important in understanding this movie, as she is a manifestation of the society surrounding them- misogynistic, racist, and ableist. From telling Emma not to cry because she 'looks ugly' and stating it as a 'women thing', locking up a mentally disabled kid and running away, to assuming her husband grew up in a 'ghetto'. Her character is a culmination of the current society that we live in. Her character is also shown to be against Emma from the start even before finding out her secret- in which she latches onto Emma's secret as a 'defense' mechanism of sort. She can now feel like her dislike was justified, showing the contrast of Emma's maturity. Charlie's character is also at fault for most of the events of the movie- but can you blame him? what is someone supposed to do when they find out such a massive thing about their soon-to-be-bride? This movie asks that question and explores the human psychology and philosophy. While you can't blame him for acting the way he did, as he now has to change the idea of Emma that he had built in his head just days before his wedding- you also can't accept his actions fully. He proceeded to find understanding in the women around him- to a co-worker, to a receptionist at the photography studio. His actions culminate in the third act, where he is smacked by his co-worker's boyfriend for his sexual advances on her, ruining the most important day of his, and Emma's lives. But while it's easy to point fingers at all of the characters, and blame them for everything, this movie needs to be looked through the lens of Psychology, and our current surrounding society. His own actions further serve as another contrast to Emma. He nearly goes ahead with cheating on her, much as Emma had nearly gone ahead with her mass shooting. By nearly committing this action, he now has to earn forgiveness in those around him, just as he searched for understanding for Emma's actions the whole movie. Emma's maturity is further shown when she accepts Charlie that same night for his actions and ruining their wedding, when it takes Charlie the whole movie up to now to truly understand Emma. There is a large sense of 'performative' behaviour displayed by the cast of characters. From Charlie pretending to have read the book Emma liked to get a date with her, to their shared laughter while wine tasting while sharing their worst actions. The line at the start with "Weddings are performative in nature' while, a fun joke, is quickly proven correct. I believe Mike and Charlie best exemplifies this, as Mike simply never acts on his own judgement but rather his peers around him- much like Charlie. In Charlie's case he is an outsider, coming from the United Kingdom. There's a sense of 'in group' and 'out group' that make people conform and look to others in what they should believe and act. Ultimately, this movie is a beautiful exploration in human psychology and looking at the way people act and their reasons for doing so. There is no 'clear' right or wrong answer in this movie. The answer you pick from this movie is dependent on who you are as a person- whether you choose to believe Emma is truly a psychopath, or are like Charlie and understand the circumstances surrounding her from her childhood. This movie forces people to have difficult and uncomfortable conversations, and that's what makes a film good.
