Perhaps aiming at too much at once, or being…fuzzy in its intentions and unfolding itself. Great performances don’t add up to something great. Disappointed, but I would watch a series with Regina and Sterling, they’re incredible together. 2022 Ranked (https://boxd.it/fSyMM)

- i haven't laughed this hard at a movie in a good while. - hall and brown are fucking phenomenal together. - there are so many things that work here: the shifting aspect ratios, in regards to the documentary and reality; the cracks and the crumbling of the facades caught by anita, and focused upon; all of the passive-aggressiveness and emotional suppression that mingles with christian culture--specifically, black christian culture. i grew up with this as a kid, so seeing it cinematically is wild as hell. - the way the film sharply changes between its serious and comedic moments is impressive, especially with the material being worked with. the darker tones are strikingly menacing or tragic when they appear--one example being when lee-curtis hits on basil; i got a chill when he caressed basil's cheek. and that khalil confrontation, wow. - and when beharie's shakura practically-singlehandedly took on lee-curtis and trinitie in that childs v. sumpter scene--whew. - and that scene with trinitie and sabina--fuck. - regina hall, just throughout this movie. fire. brown. everybody. - i don't think i've seen a film like this before, and the ebo sisters are a force, especially with this being their debut feature. i'd love to read the screenplay for it. - also, i loved being reminded of how fucking fine sterling k. brown is. 😶
