Fear Street: 1994
I have a lot to say about this so here we go: Firstly, the acting is terrible. Everyone gives tired, uninspiring performances which are dull to watch. Secondly, the plot is an absolute joke. The characters actions make little to no sense and the ending is terrible. I'll talk about the characters later but for now let’s look at the plot. An evil witch curses the town but getting people to commit murder sprees. But that’s not all, she also gets very angry when anyone touches her grave. Right, let’s start with the grave. To say this witch has been dead for over 300 years its strange that her grave it only under a little bit of moss very close to the road. Surly over 300 years the grave would've been buried deeper? That’s just one small detail in this mess though. The entire idea of a witch haunting the town is silly but could've been done well. What isn't done well is the villains being stereotypical monsters trying to chase these kids for accidently touching a grave. It feels like a Scooby-Doo episode where all the villains are controlled by a witch. However, Scooby-Doo is great as its funny, interesting and has likable characters. This is the opposite to that. It’s not funny, its incredibly cheesy and the dialogue is so cringy. Did you know that this film is American? If you forget don’t worry! The film will continuously say every American phrase you can think of. ‘You’re on our turf!’ is a favourite of mine. If Americans actually talk like this, they need to seriously get a grip, it gets hard to watch after two minutes. Next let’s talk about the characters. The first character I want to talk about is Deena. She is manipulative, selfish and above all controlling of her crush, Sam. Sam moves schools when her parents’ divorce. The school is only half an hour away from Deena's house. So, what does Deena do to comfort her then girlfriend Sam? Maybe tell her everything will be okay and help her cope with her parents divorcing? NOPE, Denna decides it’s a good idea to break up with Sam and be a total b*tch to her. So now Sam has to join a new school where she doesn’t know anyone, her parents have just divorced, and her girlfriend has left her and is acting a total b*tch. What a nice girl Deena is. Her behaviour isn’t cute, its toxic. Sam then decides to start dating a boy from her new school. Her new boyfriend is a bit of a d*ck but at least he’s nice to Sam. When Sam is in hospital, he stays with her the entire time and she seems to really like him. But that’s not good enough for Deena. It doesn’t matter that Sam’s now happy, because Deena wants her back and will stop at nothing to achieve this. Deena even shouts at Sam and mocks her for 'swallowing her way into Sunnyside'. How nice of Denna mocking Sam for having s*x with her boyfriend. Sam has done absolutely nothing wrong yet Denna public humiliates her for doing s*xual acts with her boyfriend. How nice. The worst part is the film tries to make you root for their relationship. Like what? Deena doesn’t deserve Sam, she’s a psychopath who is literally horrible. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a gay relationship that the film tries to do this, but it’s wrong on so many levels. I've read reviews on this app saying, 'Yay gay horror!' like what?!?! How anyone can watch this and support the Denna and Sam relationship is beyond me. Denna doesn’t deserve sh*t. I'm all for gay horror, and as a supporter of the LGBTQ plus community this was a real let down. We should be encouraging gay couples in films, but not when they’re toxic and abus*ve. Josh and Kates relationship is almost just as strange. Josh is shown as this nerdy child who can’t make friends. Sam is a drug dealer who is cool and fun. The actor who played Josh was 16/17 at the time of filming, the actor who played Kate was in her twenties. This feels very strange. If you had a man in his twenties kiss a 16 year old girl there would be uproar, but because it’s the other way around were meant to root their relationship? This film just confuses me, I can’t see what the director is trying to achieve. Their relationship comes from absolutely nowhere. Like Kate just suddenly becomes hor*y and has a crush on Josh? Like what? There are no scenes of them getting to know each other, and before the film they hadn’t spoke before so why does Kate just suddenly love Josh? It makes no sense, like most of this film. As somebody who loves movies this film really annoyed me. I know it’s just meant to be harmless film, but it’s so stupid I can’t help but get frustrated the more I think about it. Deena is an awful character, who has an awful story and awful development. By the end we learn that if you are a total b*tch to somebody but harass them enough they will fall in love with you. It’s not how it works in the real world, but it’s how it works in this. I find the film offensive, disgusting and one of the worst horror films I've ever seen. One star for Kates death though, interesting bread cutter.
Fear Street: 1994
This was probably my first lesbian slasher horror-thriller film, but I won't hesitate to give it more points, although honestly, it wasn't scary at all for me. Deena is literally me, because I would also walk through hell just to save my girlfriend. Her dedication was honestly crazy, especially after everything they went through before the events. Maya's appearance at the beginning actually caught me off guard—I thought she was one of the main characters, but well... I was wrong. Overall, I had a really good time watching this.
