Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

When my local Blockbuster was closing, I took the opportunity to scour the aisles, looking for highly discounted films to add to my collection (and only finding two, as I wasn't old enough to buy a ton of movies). As per usual, I found myself in the horror aisle, looking over the dwindling stock. As I searched for the perfect movie, I saw a film I recognized called Resident Evil. Every time I had been to Blockbuster, I had always been attracted to that film, the font drawing me in, then the holographic cover art really convinced me I needed that film. Finally, I ended up buying that, plus The Rite, and called it a day. Little did I know that day was going to be a day that would make me invested in one of my favorite film series. The Resident Evil franchise has been one that I have loved. Every movie is extremely entertaining, with interesting plots (for the most part) and some pretty cool zombies. It's the ultimate science fiction/horror mashup. For years now, I've been keeping up with the series. I really started becoming invested when Afterlife was released, as thtat was close to the time where I got to buy my first movie for it. Jump 7 years, and here we are now, with the conclusion of the film series. It's a bittersweet feeling knowing that this is most likely going to be the end of the series, since it's been a series that has been a part of my life for a while now. Alice is back, but the context is a little messy. Taking place a couple weeks after the ending of Retribution, The Final Chapter really doesn't offer any resolution to what happened in the previous film. There was an epic climax that left on a huge cliffhanger, but this film starts after that happened, seeming to brush it off. I was surprised to see that there wasn't any scenes taking place right after that film, since they would have been really interesting and would have given closure for that film. Despite the lack of closure for the previous film, The Final Chapter starts out with action and never seems to let up. It's always great to see familiar faces in this, and this film seems to bring back a ton of characters that are fan favorites. As I don't remember a majority of what happened in Retribution, I can't say anything about those characters and why they don't make an appearance in this, but it's great to see characters from the beginning of the series. The new characters were great to see, but it was really nice to get back to the series' roots, taking us back to Racoon City, into the terrifying Hive. While this didn't have the same visual flair as the first film, the post-apocalyptic dark/earth tones really did stay throughout a majority of the film, creating a completely different atmosphere for the film. It differentiates itself from the previous films, really feeling like this is the dark end to a series. I'm not a big fan of ambiguous endings for films in series, since it really does lead to a potetial sequel. Even though this is titled The Final Chapter, the ending suggests that there might be more films. I know that the studio said they would consider more films or a television series depending on how good this film did. It didn't do the best at the box office, so I would say that there is a high chance this is going to be the final fiml in the series. If so, it would have been nice to have a different ending for the film, instead of leaving room for a potential sequel. This is titled The Final Chapter and really should close up the series (which we have seen with Friday the 13th, with the addition of 8 more films into the series). I'd love to have closure for this film, instead of leaving that wiggle room to fit in one more film. There already are 6 films in the series, and I think that it's time to finally put this series to rest. Resident Evil is a series I have watched for years now, and it's crazy to think that this is the potential, and most likely, film in the series. While it didn't close up in a way that makes it the final chapter, it was one entertaining film. The series seemed to go a little rogue when Retribution came out, but this feels like they were going back to the series' roots, really creating an entertaining and memorable film. I'd love to hope this is the final film in the series, but I am always open to seeing more of Alice on the screen. Maybe they'll think of a way to fit in another film that makes sense. Until then, I'm content with The Final Chapter being the last film in a great franchise.
