Annihilation

Appreciating the "Y2k" CGI design decisions -- how alien our old audio visualizers really were after all ^_^ On a more serious track this was a rather meditative visual exploration of change and acceptance, which I feel the gravity of it all caught me at a good moment for viewing. Not too concerned over any contrivance in moving the setup along, but pleased simply to observe character and audience (hey that's me!) having to reckon with the flux around both.

Annihilation

Revisiting with Ez shortly after he finished the book. Coming up on a re-read of the series myself, I think I made my peace with the manner in which both works diverge from each other, and now after a couple years I think I still like the film in spite of itself. An overtly sensory work, treading through literalization of things otherwise left wide open and endlessly scaling in literary form. A sonic environment and soundtrack to die for. I still very much appreciate its "rudimentary" approach to the CG models and other visual effects, allowing for an inherent and immediate wrongness, but still capturing the tingle of a childhood memory watching a 1990's T-1000 in terrifying pursuit. And for the rest of it, just push that Winamp fractal visualizer through the haze of bigger-budget glam. Shimmer me timbers!
