there’s a lot of things that can be said about this movie but to me its all about yearning. women yearning for a life where they dont have to pick up the pieces when a man or anyone makes a mess. yearning to be understood and supported. yearning for companionship. yearning for love. everyday we yearn for something and being a woman can be lonely sometimes. also i love you lily gladstone jamie.

Certain Women

Spending time with a movie that spends itself on us right back. A noble exchange. This is grand and my small window to the world is re-shaped accordingly.

Certain Women

This is not at all a negative review. I see so much how the vision and execution of this film is expertly done. The problem for me is that I was only really compelled with Laura Dern and Jared Harris. The Lily Gladstone story was heartbreaking as well, but something about the first chapter hooked me and I kept wanting the film to return to that. Again, this is a me issue, the film itself is clearly remarkable and Kelly Reichardt is a master of slow, methodical, melancholic drama. First Cow is one of the best films of the 2010’s for me, but Certain Women just didn’t hit that bar this first time around in my opinion as a viewer. And that’s ok. I’ll continue to roll through Kelly Reichardt’s works with enthusiasm as I think she is one of the truly brilliant filmmakers we have working in this century. Special shoutout to Jared Harris and Lily Gladstone who provide gut-punch extraordinary performances.
