Diary Entry forLove & Basketball
this would’ve been better if quincy was the one who never moved on from monica and the one who pursued her because no woman should be that down bad for a man like at all. all in all it was such a fun movie, it was so adorable, i couldnt even count the amount of times i was giggling and kicking my feet. sanaa lathan, regina hall, and gabrielle union’s face cards goes crazy.

Love & Basketball
I remember watching this film with my mom a some years ago and enjoying it, but seeing it in the Criterion collection prompted me to rewatch it. I cannot express in words how ANGRY I am with myself for not recognizing how good this movie is and revisiting it sooner. Love & Basketball is funny and romantic, yes, but I think I most appreciated how deeply Q and Monica's characters were developed outside of their relationship with each other. Q's relationship with his dad is probably my favorite depiction of a father-son dynamic I've seen on screen. Is this the best friends to lovers movie...ever?
Love & Basketball
ended up writing enough about this in the movie club discord (open to patrons and mutuals, by the way) that I’m not sure I have a longer review in me. However…this is an unbelievable film, especially for a debut. It’s so well written. Their generational trauma functions as the antagonist rather than a ex or something cliche like in typical romcoms. Monica’s the clear protagonist, if there is one, but Prince-Bythewood has such a talent and love for each half of the couple. They’re so realistic and complex and sexy—it deserves to be seen as part of the romcom canon, and I don’t say that lightly! If there’s anything I’m an expert on, it’s romcoms, and basketball. Both aspects are incredibly well done. Huge shoutout to Jason for picking this.
Love & Basketball
This really a good film when you don’t watch the parts where Quincy embrass Monica.
