Mubi Premiere FAMILY ROMANCE, LLC. (2019) dir. Werner Herzog If there’s one thing director Werner Herzogknows is how to push the boundaries of filmmaking — this time I don’t think it worked out like he envisioned. Thematically deep yet so very disappointing, Family Romance, LLC.specializes in one very specific function: to make lonely people happy by the use of artifice and actors playing a role. It’s pretty layered through all the actors who act as actors acting as individuals in people’s lives. Yeah. It doesn’t take a genius to realize where Herzog stands on the future of society; empty and seemingly drifting apart from each other. There are themes of solidarity, loneliness, and the sense of un-fulfillment, notable through many of the different side characters introduced. The issue I have is I just don’t find this very interesting. The presentation leaves a lot to be desired, it feels like a student film for the most part. I would’ve enjoyed this better if they decided to go more into the documentary style, but instead we get this weird mix that just doesn’t do it for me. But who the hell am I to tell Werner Herzog what to do?
