Vice

I'm not usually into politics but this film was somewhat intriguing and kept me engaged for most of it. Christian Bale's performance may be his very best, he doesn't look like himself (when he's older) or sound like himself, he completely disappears into the role and becomes Dick Cheney. While not giving a transformative performance like her costar, Amy Adams also gives a great performance. However, I have some grudges with this movie. First off, narration. I love Jesse Plemons as much as the next guy, but this was annoying. His voice is not well suited for this role (as much as I hate to say anything wrong about Jesse Plemons, it's true) and kind of takes me out of the film. Again, I'm not a political guy either, so some of the stuff was boring. I think they dumbed it down enough for me to understand the basics, but none of that information is sticking with me. It feels very much like The Big Short where someone is constantly feeding you information that way you can understand, and it feels a little condescending. Still, the rise to power that Dick Cheney had was an interesting tale, but there's still a lot to be desired in my eyes. 5/10.

So... McKay plays to be Gaspar Noé in some points of the movie, and that certain moment is so kind, that invites you to skip the movie... in a hillarious and, believe or not, meaningful way. After that trigger warning, i realized that this movie is maybe one of the most abusive ever made. I laughed so hard, i really did, but in the rest of the film, i feel this treats you like sh*t. You can read 5 minutes of Cheney's biography and news on the internet, instead of wasting two hours. Brilliant or insecure writting? Beats me. That's the kind of flick that you can hate or you can love. I really f*cking tried to like it or dig in it. Literally. Believe or not, again, Bale deserves his goldy Oscar. Really bold move, Annapurna.

The 4th wall has been broken! I gotta give it to Adam McKay. He makes true events extremely watchable. Christian Bale and his metamorphosis should be studied or it probably already is/has been. But I do have to dock at least one mark because something felt a little off. It’s hard being mid 40s playing someone in their mid 70s. Dick Cheney - war and crimes against humanity.

Vice

Adam McKay's latest film is a surprising triumph. With an all-star cast, as well as clever and humorous jabs, Vice soars. Just like McKay's previous film The Big Short, Vice survives because of the fantastic ensemble. Christian Bale and Amy Adams certainly are the standouts, but Tyler Perry was another surprising actor that stood out in the scenes that he was in. I did not know much about Dick Cheney's doing in the White House going in, and I actually did learn a lot about parts of the government and theories that I had no idea existed. It's a quick film that keeps you on the edge of the seat the entire time, which makes the film fun to watch. It's understandable why some people do not enjoy the film, since it does have a liberal bias in the way the story is told, as well as the way the facts are presented, but I still think that people can learn from it, even if it goes against their political beliefs. Altogether, Vice has one of the year's strongest casts, and is one of the most unforgettable films of the year.
