synthesis of iwais two main threads over his career: schmaltzy mass market twee romance (a la love letter, last letter, april story, hana and alice) and overly-long converging-thread-plotted depressive moodpiece (swallowtail butterfly, lily chou-chou aka The one i like) ... and it's incredible. most of this is boring but it has the greatest payoff put to screen, i feel. cocco creates an unforgettable character in half-an-hour. haru kuroki is great, too... about the plague of loneliness; people who resort to paying for relationships e.g. porn, math tutor/friend, wedding guests, maid/wife… the film reaffirms the authenticity of those transactions ... which i'm not sure what to make of
