Metropolis

Loved lots about this. The size and scale is absolutely breathtaking and the set designs are beautiful. Found the story interesting but wasn't a massive fan of the ending, the hands were treated like literal slaves and at the end they were fine shaking hands with the man responsible? Seems farfetched but everything else makes up for this masterpiece.

Metropolis

I truly didn't appreciate this film for what it truly is when I first watched it. While I don't believe it's a masterpiece, there is no denying that Metropolis is one of the most influential products in film history, as well as one of the greatest movies to be created in early cinema. Metropolis is beautiful not only in its set design (possibly the greatest set design of any movie I've seen), but also within the story of the film as well. While I've only seen two films from Fritz Lang, I have picked up quickly that the meanings in his stories tell the audience about his issues with society. For example, Metropolis explores social inequality and the relationship between the working class and the upper class (the final line of dialogue within the film directly telling the audience "The mediator between head and hands must be the heart). Through this, Metropolis proves that it is an incredibly meaningful film. However, as I said before, I still don't think the film is a masterpiece. Personally, I found the acting to be too dramatic at times. I understand that conveying emotions was a gargantuan task for its time, but it feels so extra to the point that it takes me out of the film. Overall, to me, this is a great movie and I'm glad it's recognized as such. 8/10.
