The Flower of My Secret

The Flower of My Secret

- de palma's rosa and lampreave's jacinta have such a great comedic dynamic during the visit segment. - i think almodóvar must've had volver (2006) in mind for a while, because i swear the plot of the cold-storage room novel leo brought to alicia is the same plot as volver. - and it's interesting, to see how much leo wants to distance herself from the amanda gris pseudonym, while going through her marital troubles with paco. it's like she's trying to move forward and further explore her talent as a writer, becoming a different kind of novelist than she's been, but still has a very difficult and stagnant time (completely understandable) in navigating through her relationship with paco. the romance they may have once shared is quickly fading, if not already faded, and leo's grasp on the reality of the situation--and even on reality, in general--is getting stronger with each day. she expresses that the best way she knows how, through writing, even if it doesn't financially benefit her like the amanda gris novels did. - i can't remember from my first viewing, but are betty and paco fuckin? - i don't recall ever seeing an almodóvar film where paredes plays the sole lead--closest i've gotten is probably high heels (1991)--but, i need to see more of her work as the sole lead. the other roles i've seen her in, she kills it every time, but when she has all of that space to herself? phenomenal. - i think leo knew it was already over with paco. - i think that cut to the screaming competition after the overdose attempt segment is abrasively and darkly hilarious of almodóvar. - the way almodóvar conveyed that sequence of leo's overwhelming aftermath of paco's departure, to have ángel save her in the midst of the student protest, was beautiful. i love the shot of them being static and the main focal points of vibrant colors amongst the movement of the white-coated crowd. - oh, they are fuckin. - oh, were fuckin. - i love the scene with leo and the women of the village. - i wonder if almodóvar took a shot at himself, calling cold-room storage garbage, or maybe the possible trouble of its conception at the time? - "call me. i live to see you again." goddamn, ángel, you can have me. 😩 - echanove as ángel is so lovely. - i like how it's unconfirmed that leo and ángel end up together by the film's conclusion. either way, i really enjoyed their relationship.

The Flower of My Secret

An incredible character study with such an interesting premise. I'm not exactly sure if it spins out as a fully fleshed out film. But its the colors, the drama, the directions it spins out in that really give credit to an incredible performance by Parades. Also s/o to the 𝘝𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘳 easter egg!
