Matador

Scrolling through the comments for the film, Caleb Shively wrote: ".. it betrays the safety it establishes with its audience. More movies should do this." An interesting take given how Almodóvar films unravel. There is a sense of safety, of what to expect, and then, like a switchblade, through a shot or color scheme or insane character exploration in line or jest, the film unravels in a way you least expect, bridging but never fully committing to camp or kitsch or aestheticism, but all in good fun. Because his films never take themselves too seriously and they're the right level of fun to make you scream or holler. I mean, all of Serna's outfits were so kunty!!! There's a bit of crazy in everyone and the film lands in this completely messy, chaotic and wonderful way that it's high entertainment that never falls too low brow or reaches too high brow, all in melodramatic flair that I love so much. This one's out there, but a lot of fun. A few comments have said that this was tone deaf in the extremities that Almodóvar explores, but I think he evens everything out with female independence, his love for them, how he fashions them in costume and incredible lines that they're never insulting or harmful. Rather, women are victorious in his films. They have a might, unmatched and sometimes even win through patriarchal settings.

Matador
