Dancer in the Dark
“I used to dream that I was in a musical, because, in a musical, nothing dreadful ever happens.”
Dancer in the Dark
Auteurs: Lars von Trier Film #6: Dancer in the Dark Never before have I been as shaken as I am currently after finishing Dancer in the Dark. It’s a despicable film, a film filled with so much hope, love, care, a film that you know ends tragically, but still hope ends well. A film that completely deconstructs the traditional Hollywood musical, creating a being that is unlike anything to have graced screens before. It’s an artist’s dream, a love-story that stands amongst the greats. Lars Von Trier, the famed provocateur, turns the despicable into love, turns a hatred into a form of love, albeit a twisted form, but love nonetheless. Björk is a powerhouse who deserves much more recognition than she has received. Dancer in the Darkis not without it’s own demons, as this is the film where von Trier began to descend into his more provocative nature, gaining notoriety due to sexual assault allegations. It’s difficult to separate this beautiful film from such a horrible person, but the despicable nature of the artist is not reflected whatsoever here. Instead, we are given a beautiful film, a heartbreaking film, and one of the finest pieces of art I have ever witnessed. This film is despicable, it’s made by a despicable man who leads you on, well knowing his intentions with how this film would end, but gives hope, hope that Selma will live. Hope that she will be re-United with her son. Hope. It’s a despicable thing to give audiences, but it’s the only thing we received here. Dancer in the Darkhas floored me, left me speechless, and had forever ingrained itself into my life. I applaud von Trier, even as I begin to look at him with disgust.
Dancer in the Dark
