My Dinner with Andre
Ohhhh man this one hitting in 2024 something fierce! So good finally getting to it. Wally's character has a good day when a dead cockroach isn't in his morning coffee cup while rich, alien Andre regails us with anecdote after anecdote of other rich aliens. Real leisure class hours at a table without intersectionality and an opinion for everything, all quietly framed by Malle against the backdrop of long-suffering help. But there's still a quest, and one only advanced by ricocheting off each other! In the aftermath Wally treats himself to a taxi ride home, having been prodded to such a degree by Andre's spiritual tourism he now has to reconsider his place in time's stream, reckon a bit with his experiences and his lot. It really feels less about any one thing uttered as how you react to these characters uttering them.
My Dinner with Andre
Almost like any real dinner, I went into this movie nervous. I mean, I'm just now starting to get into what would be considered "high-brow" cinema. I knew it would be a 2 hour movie of just 2 guys talking. It could have proven to be a daunting task for me. The damnedest thing happened... I sunk into it, as if I were a third muted member of this dinner. Every story was easily visualized in my head, every topic interesting and it just became an easy watch. Of course I spaced out from time to time, not to the fault of the film, that's just the nature of my own brain not being able to settle down easily. I was mostly still engaged the entire way through the film. Not to mention how excellent the screenplay is and how simple (but effective) the performances are First watch of the new year!
