Elle
Sicko mode activaaaaaate! A film of finely distilled damage, paired so nicely with darkly absurd literary escalation. Verhoeven showing up once again as a genre rascal, now with the firepower of Huppert. Whew! edit: also the way old school filmmakers implement videogames in their work is always a fuckin' trip. Thinking of Leos Carax and Spike Lee here, too.
Elle
Elle
It’s hard to describe my relationship to this film. In a way it reminds me of Lobster (2015). I’m not exactly sure how to rate it. Complex characters and themes
Elle
2016 has been an amazing year for film. This year produced my favorite film of all time, American Honey. There have been so many amazing films this year, it's hard to keep track of how many good films there are (luckily, Letterboxd allows us to make lists or else I'd be frantically making my 2016 list tonight). Despite how saddening 2016 has been, there's no doubt that this year has produced some amazing cinema. When looking at the year, I wanted to end the year with something memorable. What's more memorable than Elle, a film that I have a connection to. I knew about Elle earlier in the year, hoping that I was able to fit it into my 2016 list. I became invigorated when I happened to enter a contest and won a poster of Elle, signed by both Paul Verhoeven and Isabelle Huppert. Why not end the year with a film that I have a signed poster of? Elle is the perfect film to end the year. This film was nothing like I was expecting it to be. I remember first watching the trailer when I went and saw Moonlight and I knew that it was going to be great. But even after watching the trailer, I didn't have a clue how good of a film this was going to be. Lead by Huppert's mesmerizing performance, Elle is an interesting and brutal look into sexual assault, and how it affects your life. It was interesting seeing how Michèle reacted to everything, as she didn't want to stray from her typical lifestyle. Huppert gave an amazing performance, having to go through some tough scenes, but ended up playing an amazing performance. It's a shame that Elle was cut from being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars, because it definitely is a film that deserves to be nominated, as well as have Huppert nominated. Elle is an amazing film that is difficult to watch, but is an extremely well done film. It's interesting to see Verhoeven's filmography, as he has done so many different types of films, Elle being among his most different films. As usual, I'm really interested to see what he will do in the future, as well as see what he has done in the past. As a close to 2016, I have to say that I've had an amazing year. Letterboxd has opened me up to so many different films, and I can't wait to see what 2017 brings. It's always weird to end the year, but I'm glad that I can say that Elle is the film that closed off 2016. Have a happy New Year and see you in 2017.
