Cold Fish
Cold Fish is completely unhinged at times, which typically wouldn’t work, but Sion Sono manages to craft these unhinged moments into memorable art. I’m always astounded by any film I see from Sono, they’re all so different, even if they have common themes (typically about adolesence and loss). His visual storytelling style seems so amateurish, as his camera movement and general aesthetic lean toward lower budget productions, but he’s able to create compelling and flushed out films nonetheless. Cold Fish features some of the best acting that I’ve see from a Sono film, as well as some of the biggest twists. It’s an unnerving piece, which leaves you constantly guessing and wondering what exactly will be featured in the full 140 minute runtime. I’d love to get my hands on a blu-ray copy of this, since the version I saw was pretty low on audio quality, as well as visual quality. Sion Sono really is a wonderful filmmaker, with a filmography that I cannot wait to explore some more.
