I feel very split with South Korean Cinema. Their films feel very basic at times. Like, here’s a genre, now let’s make a movie that contains all the typical tropes of that genre. The South Korean wave of the early 2000’s introduced us to some masterful directors—Park Chan-Wook, Bong Joon-Ho, Kim Jee-Woon, Lee Chang-Dong, and a couple more. Many of my favourite films come from this country, my favourite film is The Handmaiden (2016). But I find that outside the odd few every couple of years, a lot of the films find themselves retreading already established and successful movies, not really bending the boundaries, more riding the waves that these films created. The films that do break that exception are so good that I find myself watching South Korean films hoping for that next masterpiece that I know it can give me. Sleep (2023), feels like an honest breath of fresh air, a director that clearly knows what he’s making, and how the story should play out, it never goes batshit crazy, nor does it under-deliver the arc it’s set out on. A film that feels like a ticking time bomb that explodes at just the right moment, balancing the tone perfectly (something that I believe a lot of Korean movies and dramas struggle with) Partnered with two great lead performances from the late Lee Sung Kyung, and the brilliant Jung Yu-Mi. This film really surprised me.
