Pulgasari

Enquanto o Japão criou seu Kaiju mais icônico, Godzilla, como resposta ao medo nuclear pós-segunda guerra. A Coréia do Norte em 1985 criou seu monstro próprio, mas diferente de Godzilla, Pulgasari é uma prece, literalmente, de socorro em prol da libertação do campo e as pessoas comuns contra o autoritarismo feudal de sua época. Sendo muito consciente de seus temas, Pulgasari é uma criatura que cresce conforme a organização do povo se torna mais forte. É muito interessante a forma como o monstro se mantem resistente conforme a vontade de seu povo e daquela a quem ele responde diretamente o pede e a forma como ele demonstra a resistência e aliança de um povo é muito bom.

A great creature design and good effects work help keep the film moving. The plot is interesting, but a bit drawn out. Worth checking out if you’re a Kaiju fan.

North Korea’s take on the Kaiju genre. Not good. Not great. But not bad. Actually charmed by this. Where terror usually reigns at the beginning of a monster’s becoming, here it comes by way of charm. Cutesy even. It starts out with such great intentions, where the right and fight for farmers against corrupt governance reigns half the film, but once they win over, they realize how freedom harms their community in a rushed ending that collapses the film onto itself. Full propaganda here, sure, but it’s interesting to see the conventions of special effects a little delayed in comparison to the rest of the world. It was the 80s. These effects feel at least two decades too late.
