Cries and Whispers
had a conversation with my good friend levi, at the kuyo premiere, about ingmar bergman's brilliance. i've had my eyes on tackling bergman's filmography, but never really knew where to start having only experienced 'persona' previously, i chose to watch 'cries and whispers' the film's screenplay and cinematography is brilliant. bergman's writing in this film is incredibly dense, so much so that he doesn't need to rely on an "intrusive" score to evoke emotion. instead, the raw performances, masterful dialogue and carefully crafted scenes speak volumes on their own, and it feels like he's sort of speaking through his characters with the monologues sven nykvist hands and eyes are magical with how he frames the face closeups in such an incredibly inconspicuous way, so raw and tangible edit: some shots and scenes looked too familiar and it just hit me, michael haneke's 'the piano teacher'... esp the bathroom scene iykyk. so cool that haneke paid homage to ingmar bergman

Cries and Whispers
The most visually stunning of Bergman's work. A lot more quieter than I imagined. All the stress exists in imagery, color, and poise (character posture and camera positions). The ways some are close up or far out, in scene, in person. It's a strong piece of work that feels like it's missing something. I can't articulate it, but it's perhaps the build up to the twist. Otherwise, a very Bergman-y Bergman that I would like to rewrite and claim as my own! Teehee!
