A Scene at the Sea

After violence, Takeshi Kitano brings us something outside of his comfort zone: a story about a deaf boy who wants to learn how to surf. As simple as that with such a minimal script, the scenes are stationary and make me wonder if this is how Haneke learned how to shoot his films. With so much stillness in each scene, they are also filled with the sound of the ocean that seems to never leave the screen, it seems to be the very notion of each character's existence. Their existence or proof of existence rests in their expressions. A smile, a nod. The way they look out at the ocean, at squint par sun. But having gone through the entire mood of dog days summers, we learn that Kitano not only approves of the flash of violence seen on the big screen, but also the gentle smallness of the world.
