Sole Survivor

Exceptional. Best to come into this knowing nothing as part of the fun is seeing how it all unravels. Is it the paranormal? Is it an actual murderer? Is it the dead? Who is after who? Great use of suspense in low-angle shots and 80s interiors to have that lived-in feeling, but effects and kills are quite simple. What’s scary is the everyday. All set in the suburbs, it makes you afraid of the large shrubs that used to house privacy for homes, but all of that collapses in Eberhardt’s strong direction in disrupting suburban comfort to reveal the quietude of evil. It rests. Lays dormant. But all deliberate. Knows its cause, and so does Eberhardt, slowly dissecting peace to let blood flow, to an incredible last act.
