Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands

Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands
I loved some of the composition, like, when Vadinho is on the window sill and then moves the curtain to the left, to Dona Flor in the chair; after he goes over to her; when he's singing out with the band in white suit at night - the colors are also noteworthy. The sets & the film, in general, feel lived-in. Wilker's performance is so convincing, and Sônia Braga is also superb. Vadinho's re-entrance as a ghostly figure happened only twenty-ish minutes before the ending; going into this film, I had thought it would be more of a part of the movie, that is okay -- the pacing works. It also explores their relationship throughout the runtime kind of. He is only truly absent from the screen for 35 minutes, even then, his absence is a present thing, obviously, whether it's in the characters' words, actions (like her still hiding the money in the radio thingy), or the inevitable contrast between him and Teodoro that the audience is bound to draw. While I was watching it, I expected upon his return, remorse or acknowledgment or something of the sort from him for the terrible behavior he displayed towards Dona Flor (& other women) when he was alive -- I still would have liked to have had that happen. Alas! It does flip the script on their relationship by the end in a much-needed change in (power) dynamics, the end end result was quite amazing. It could be the previous "something of the sort," except it had more to do with the limitations of being a ghostly figure than himself/his growth. I don't think we are meant to take his return as just in her head because of the casino scene and ritual scene. But that's also interesting, of it just as a fantasy, a way to work through her conflicting feelings towards him, find a way to express/live out her desires & fantasies, and create a more devoted, better treating version of him.
