Memoria

Have now had the opportunity three times to visit this. Truly love the experience of this work. There is at first the 'compare & contrast' aspect of being able to weigh the difference between three theaters, three different projectors, three different levels of contrast, sound levels, seating comforts. For instance, the detail of a bird flying in the lower frame of one screen isn't even viewable on another. Fidelity to directorial intent... always filtered through so many things. There is at second the varying experiences of three separate audiences; all sharing in common the initial startle of that first, percussive *boom* striking through the silence of Swinton's half-sleep, but then easing into the general rustlings and occasional comings and goings, and sometimes phone-callings where there shouldn't ever be phone-callings. There is at third the slow carving out of my own personal space. Much here in the way of bridging/conduit/tunnel elements, stasis and passage, with one's own excavation never far behind. Eased into like lowering into a warm pool. I am brought back, sometimes vividly, to the first time I ever actually sat and fully watched a rainstorm roll in, spend itself, and then dissipate. Or the first time with my own camera pointed at some horizon line, bracketed by mountains, to wait out the gradient from early dawn to bright morning. I am brought back to visiting museums over the years, getting caught by one artwork or another, with the sudden appreciation that the context of that moment won't be replicated, or hell, I likely won't even see the artwork again, or won't call upon the emotion of the moment in the same way. My second viewing of Memoria coincided with a thunderstorm happening in the real world, the rumbling on screen answered by the rumbling outside, and the potential of a power outage hovering close. Charged atmosphere. There remains the anticipation of future viewings, and the hope that I can be there for them.

Memoria

this my third time watching this and it always feel like a new experience everytime i watched it. the reveal is my favorite scene all the time and before that when he asked "why are you crying? that's not your memory" that's it! it's all about empathy! let's be kind, like why can someone be so cruel?
