It's astonishing at how personal a film can feel. Both for the viewer and the filmmaker, it's really an achievement when a film can make you feel like you personally know the characters, like they are normal people in your life. Mike Mills has managed to do this yet again with Beginners, an astonishing look into the LGBTQ+ community and how age is portrayed within the community. Christopher Plummer was honestly stunning, with his performance shining throughout the entire film. Having seen this film after 20th Century Women, it would seem like these films were filmed right after each other, since they both have the same visual flair and style, despite being released 6 years from each other. With these two films, it seems like there's a deeper understanding as to what makes Mike Mills who he is, since both films that I've seen are semi-autobiographical. Beginners may not be as accessible as 20th Century Women, since many people can't identify as being an older gay man, but it's still a film that many can understand, since there are many people out there who are. I'm blown away yet again by Mike Mills and I cannot wait to see what else he is going to produce, since I know it will be nothing short of being brilliant.

I wanted to write one of its quotes up here. But there's way too many to choose from. The dialogue is impeccable and quote-worthy. This is Mike Mills' second film that I've seen, first one being 20th Century Women. I have to say I love them both, this one slightly more though. I'm now a big fan of how he crafts these - focusing on certain time period(s) from the character's life but still making us feel like we were with them through their whole life journey. Which is also mainly because of narration from the lead character(s) about their family's personal history while highlighting what was going on politically and in the culture at that time in general; aspects that most likely shaped them, all while we get to witness the stylishly put relevant photos on the screen; the snippets from their life. Which in parts lends these the personal feel. Beginners is so lovely, cute and charming. It almost makes me want to be with someone romantically. Almost. Someone who could return the feelings, an actual real life person instead of just daydreams about celebrities or made-up person in my head, who I know I won't have to deal with because they are not actually there. Back to the film, all the scenes where Oliver and his dog interact especially where he says 'Go and have your own experiences with your own people. I'll be right here. I'm a human. I'm not a dog."...art!! So is the time where he dresses up as Sigmund Freud and acts like an actual therapist, that too, in the middle of a party. Until Anna sees the sadness in him. Ewan McGregor - he now has my heart, and I'd trust him with my pup. Who btw is very smart, cute, and funny when he gets confused by seeing something new that he doesn't understand.
