Portraying familial bonds is director Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s bread and butter. It’s been clear time and time again that he knows how to convey deep human emotion in his films, while staying grounded within reality.Brokeris in that same vein, piecing together a story of giving up family, as well as choosing who your family is. He strings these ideas into a beautiful tapestry, vibrant with life and bursting with raw emotion. It was surprising to see a little more of a “thriller” aspect within the film, but I’m glad to see something a little different, since it really did see this film apart from his previous work I’ve seen. Brokermay be a slow burn, but it’s one that pays off in the end, just as Kore-eda’s other films do. I love the way he manages to create these small worlds that feel so grounded in reality, as if these are documentaries, rather than feature films. This truly is a great film, certainly a highlight of the year.

thank you for being born Kore-eda could direct a film that is totally Korean, or French like his The Truth but you would recognize that this is a Kore-eda film; a drama with little bit of crime, melodramatic yet proportional, a family without real family but a found family.

the shots, the performances by korea's well-loved artists. this was so relaxing to watch while also compelling me to love the inconvenient found-family that gave me a bittersweet ending.
