Suburbicon

Suburbicon has been completely marketed wrong. Having seen advertisements for this, it was said to be a comedy, which in itself isn't a lie, but it's a black comedy, something that people don't know when they go into the film. The advertisements made this film seem as if it were a completely different film, so my expectations were very off from what the film actually was. As previously stated, Suburbicon is a black comedy. Most people going in will go in thinking they're getting a pure comedy, but that's far from the case. Throughout, I could feel the crowd getting uncomfortable, letting out uncomfortable laughs and sighs. This crowd came in wanting to see a comedy, but instead saw a film discussing racial tension, white privilege, and a murder tale that, while predictable, still is interesting, but not as interesting as what else was going on. There are two stories here in Suburbicon. There's the story about the white, nuclear family, living their life amid tragedy. Then there's the more interesting story of an African American family moving into the town, showing the tension between the entirely white town and their new neighbors. While the Lodge family story had some interesting points, the characters in that story just weren't there. They were the focus of the film, but the audience is more aimed to root for the Mayers. If this film was more focused on the racial tension between the town, making the film a completely different film entirely, it might have been a little more focused and less awkward at times. But, the film itself is quite enjoyable. There are moments that are absolutely horrifying, but at the same time you almost laugh, finding that fine line between horror and comedy, really showing that this is a black comedy. Situational irony is always fantastic, and this film definitely utilizes it in the best way, making for an awkward climax, but ultimately is a pretty decent finale. The cast was great, albeit awkward at times, especially with Damon's character, but all of this awkward acting and character development really made the film what it is. Suburbicon definitely is not a film for everybody. It's a black comedy, which really alienates many people from fully enjoying the film, a film they thought was going to be a comedy or straight up crime drama. It's an enjoyable film for the most part, and while it does have flaws, it's still another great film written by the Coen brothers and a good film from George Clooney.

george, at no point during this random, incoherent film were you even close to anything that could be considered good cinema. everyone who watched this is now dumber for having done so. i award you one star, and wish you the best of luck in the future.
