The Only Girl in the Orchestra

"I'd rather be a secret artist, than an artist with a PR. I am an artist in my own mind, but I don't want to advertise.” This document was, to me, something comforting to watch. Orin O'Brien is someone I don't know until now, and somehow...this documentary helps me to get to know her, one way or another. I think watching this as an artist – albeit in a different field, is something I can relate to. Mostly because of also me wanting to be in the background, and not on the spotlight. I, too, just want to let my work speak for itself. I think Orin is also another good example of being a successful person in their field, but remains humble and down-to-earth more than ever.

The Only Girl in the Orchestra

"Growing up Orin was the adult I admired most. My father's older sister, she had the life I wanted for myself. A New York City artist's life, An independent woman's life. She has navigated getting older better than anyone I've known." There's something so special about a free spirited older female relative and the joy that comes with growing closer as your relationship shifts from that of an adult and child to two adults, who can talk more seriously and deeply than ever before. This dynamic is tapped into so sincerely in this doc and I appreciated that. I really relate to the feeling of looking up to an aunt and seeing the person I'd like to be in her.
