At Eternity's Gate
At Eternity's Gate
At Eternity's Gate is the culmination of many years of interest in Vincent van Gogh's final years, focusing on the final few years of his life before his untimely death. Willem Dafoe completely channels van Gogh, giving an eerie performance, but one of the strongest I've seen in this year's batch of nominees. It's a beautifully shot film, with some interesting decisions when it came to showing van Gogh's vulnerability, primarily focusing on making these scenes in French when he feels alienated. I am going to have to watch this film another time to fully develop my opinion, but I absolutely fell in love with the presentation of van Gogh's life.
