His Girl Friday

Both leads are great in this 40s Noir classic. The dialogue is fast and snappy, with some great lines thrown in. The story is silly but fun and chemistry between the entire cast is great.

His Girl Friday

im just gonna pretend that it actually ended with Hildy coming to her senses about Walter and found a better man while continuing her career in journalism.

His Girl Friday

i was gonna say i can see why so many people like this…but i don’t! this movie is often hailed as a classic of the screwball comedy genre, but upon closer inspection, it reveals a deeply troubling narrative centered around manipulation, coercion, and disregard for personal autonomy in the toxic dynamic between walter and hildy. walter’s bitch ass is presented as a charming yet cunning newspaper editor who will go to any lengths to achieve his goals, particularly when it comes to keeping hildy in his orbit. from the very beginning, his tactics to sabotage hildy’s plans to leave the newspaper business and remarry reveal his lack of respect for her. he schemes to delay her departure and her marriage to bruce by creating distractions, orchestrating crises, and outright lying. his insistence on pulling hildy back into his world of high-stakes journalism isn’t romantic or endearing; it’s selfish and controlling. hildy is a sharp, capable journalist who has made the decision to leave her career behind in favor of a quieter life with bruce. while you can certainly debate the merits of her choice, it’s still herdecision to make. walter, however, refuses to accept this. through a series of manipulations, he draws her back into the chaotic world she’s trying to leave, playing on her passion for journalism and her sense of professional duty. By the end of the film, he effectively coerced her into abandoning her plans for a fresh start, framing his actions as acts of love, reducing her autonomy to a pawn in walter’s power play. now i hate to pity a man but bruce, hildy’s fiancé, is treated as a punching bag throughout the film. his character is definitely weak minded and overly trusting, but the disdain with which he is treated by walter and eventually hildy is disheartening. bruce represents a path of stability and respect that hildy could choose, yet the film mocks his kindness and decency as unworthy of her. walter’s relentless schemes to discredit bruce—from setting him up for false arrests to stealing his wallet—are played for laughs but feel cruel and unwarranted. the rapid-fire dialogue and “witty banter” are often praised as hallmarks of its brilliance, and i do appreciate fast dialogue (loved bringing up baby!), but the humor masks an undercurrent of cynicism that leaves a bitter taste. the central plot, involving a wrongful execution and a corrupt political system, is treated more as a backdrop for comedic antics than as a serious issue. walter’s willingness to exploit this tragedy for the sake of a good story is emblematic of the film’s broader disregard for ethical journalism and human decency. the relationship between walter and hildy lacks genuine emotional depth. the script positions them as a couple who thrive on their shared passion for journalism but there’s little to suggest that their bond extends beyond their professional compatibility. walter’s actions demonstrate not love or respect, but a desire for control. hildy’s eventual acquiescence feels less like a romantic reconciliation and more like a resignation to her inability to escape his influence. His Girl Friday may be revered for its snappy dialogue and fast-paced energy, but its deeper themes reveal a troubling narrative about manipulation and control. walter is not the charming anti-hero he’s often portrayed as, but a master manipulator who refuses to respect hildy’s autonomy. it might have worked as a critique of toxic relationships or unethical journalism, it instead glorifies walter’s actions and frames his behavior as romantic. this movie left an awful taste in my mouth, and it fails to reconcile its comedic tone with its morally dubious underpinnings.
