Skate Kitchen
How this film manages to be a breath of fresh air when it comes to its familiar figure of independent youths in cinema is pretty much thanks to director and writer Crystal Moselle—here she has crafted an honest and experimental wave of young indies in paradise, also thanks to its cast of non-actors, particularly its group of girl skaters, a.k.a. Skate Kitchen. They move from playground to playground performing over anything that they can shred their wheels on, and all with a tight as fuck smile on. It's fun to watch, to understand, and to relate to. Getting out of loneliness is tough, and Skate Kitchen paints that picture of reconnecting with a purpose and having a little more love quite appropriately. 3.8/5
