Shogun's Samurai

94/100 Check out my 2024 ranked - boxd.it/shaTi (https://boxd.it/shaTi) I will be updating this review as I watch more episodes but so far, this is absolutely phenomenal. Silence is a film that I really like because of the way it's shot in 1600s Japan and the religious connflicts that it deals with. It explored a topic that I despise but I absolutely loved the film. This film deals with that and much more. It explores the complexities and the dark side of both the Christians and the Japanese. It's complicated and makes you pay attention and for someone who loves religious history as much as I do, this is an attention magnet for me. It's beautifully shot, directed and acted so far. The costumes look amazing and the storytelling is at its finest. Episode 2 is a perfect 10/10 episode. It's explanatory, intriguing, exciting and shows a lot of progression. The whole assassin sequence is beautiful. This show is quite brutal when it wants to be and I absolutely admire that. I'm surprised this wasn't marketed well because I am just hearing about it after it's release and the production quality seems way too great for it to be just some show. Episode 4 is yet another perfect 10/10 episode. I wish Anna Sawai would join him in his bath. Okay I should go to horny jail! But seriously, it’s a beautiful episode. Focuses on a little bit of everything, emotions, betrayal, war, training etc. The music is excellent too. And I am genuinely in awe of the cinematography. It’s so layered and the colours are so well contrasted. This episode introduces more storylines and does so brilliantly. Episode 5 is yet another masterpiece in storytelling and writing. It’s got such a strong hold on emotional tension and progression through minute scenes extended by dialogue. I am in awe. It displays the Japanese as people who are burdened by their rules but do not have the courage to break them. And after this show ends, I can’t wait for people to make edits of its cinematography because this is a pure spectacle. Episode 6 is yet another exceptional episode. There was something so sinister and guarded about this episode. This is quickly shaping up to be one of the best seasons of television ever. Episode 7 is a gut wrenching episode of sacrifice for preservation. An oddly satisfying finale. It’s rare and I mean extremely rare that a show setting up for a grand war ends without one and still holds up as good. This was a finale of conversations, of the summary of changes from the first episode to the last. It was a showcase of the development of characters and relationships, the act of letting go and the willingness to get back up and look forward to something. The pirate became an honourable man, the outcast became the Shogun, the translator became the soul and the traitor redeemed himself in the eyes of the audience. It truly was a beautiful ending to this masterpiece of a show. This has been an unforgettable experience.
