Memento

Clever and though provoking, memento keeps you hooked throughout. The story is told in a unique way, typical of Nolan’s other works, while keeping the story flowing nicey. The twists and turns are interesting and the ending makes you draw your own conclusions.

Had to watch for class today. I wish I could watch this for a first time again. Memento is a spectacular achievement in both screenwriting and editing. How do you even think of a thing like this? I know it’s super generic and obvious to say this, but Christopher Nolan is a genius. Maybe my favorite of his films? Hard to say because I’ve said that about 4 of his films. But I might mean it for Memento this time because, for some reason, when I was watching it today, I realized what this movie does. It brings awareness to the manipulation of mentally handicapped people and manipulation is a reoccurring theme throughout the film. It’s also a movie about a person’s purpose in life. It’s ALSO a movie about the pain of losing a loved one. Every day, you wake up and it feels like your loved one should be there. But they aren’t. Easily a 10/10 in my opinion. Anyone who hasn’t seen this should watch it right now! Edit: Leonard Shelby is one of my favorite characters from any movie ever. I know this might seem a little hyperbolic, but it’s the truth.

Se existiu alguma fagulha de um bom cineasta durante a ascensão de Christopher Nolan na indústria Hollywoodiana, isso ocorreu de 1998 - ano de lançamento do Following, seu primeiro longa - até 2006 (excetuando Batman Begins, claro), quando estreou aquele que se mantém como seu melhor - e único verdadeiramente bom - filme: The Prestige. Durante esse espaço de oito anos, era possível enxergar algumas virtudes que, caso bem compreendidas pelo cineasta, certamente dariam outra natureza ao seu cinema (especialmente essa dissociação/ambiguidade do tempo pela montagem em filmes como Insomnia e o próprio Memento). Aqui, o cabo de guerra entre as transições da montagem que dilatam a temporalidade e as vociferações antipáticas estruturadas nesse didatismo reminiscente de rádionovela, como bem afirma o Marcelo Hessel acerca do diretor, prejudicam a qualidade do resultado final de qualquer coisa que Nolan se interesse em construir na cena (a fragilidade cerebral do protagonista, suscetível a qualquer verdade que lhe é entregue, por exemplo). Esses lampejos de um artista menos envolvido com o calculismo pragmático e mais estimulado em criar imagens começa a apresentar sinais de ausência em Insomnia, revela seu pior lado em Begins (necessitado de uma dramaturgia que nunca encena ou compreende a sua densidade), ameaça uma esperança em The Prestige e morre em definitivo de The Dark Knight em diante. A partir dai, Nolan decidiu enterrar não apenas a sua filmografia, mas uma parcela do cinema blockbuster e com estragos que se perpetuam até hoje sem qualquer sinal de mudança.
