This one certainly seems to skim along a fault line with audiences. After sitting with it a couple days, letting my immediate dissatisfaction bleed out, I've come to a reckoning, if only just with what it was trying to do and the deeply personal connections it was attempting in the process. Filming in such an oblique manner, affecting an aging cinematic degradation (which doesn't really comply with the '95 setting, adding to the irregularity), crafting an audio soundscape that almost *exactly* mimics the old 1980's portable tape recorder I screamed into at age seven, and finally piling the blankets high over a very specific suburban kernel of childhood dread. Quick note on viewing environment: I'd honestly recommend seeing this *not* in theaters. The potential intimacy of a lights-out home viewing is one thing... but the mixing levels being what they are, and the overall volume raised too high in our screening, the four or so "jump scares" were piercing and physically painful, absolutely horrible, exhibiting all the delicacy of an airhorn by a sleeping person's ear. Rage-inducing, and my initial 1/2 star thoughts were probably a reaction to that more than anything else.

So boring And the most interesting seems to be the ending.
