The Strangers: Chapter 1

The Strangers: Chapter 1 is no The Strangers, and I think that mentality needs to be held going into this film, or else you’re going to be heavily disappointed. For what it’s worth, this film tries its hardest to craft a narrative that is far enough from the original film, while still having a sense of originality. Where the first film was a fear-inducing, tension driven film, this one feels more up to par with the Blumhouse style horrors that we now see on the big screen. What little tension they actually build pays off, but it takes a long time for the film to actually get any sort of tension built. We knew this was going to be a part of a series, which makes the ending of the film feel like something you could easily tell was going to happen, but it sets the stage for what, hopefully, is a stronger sequel. I still found this to be a pretty fun watch, and had a good time watching it in the theater. I understand why people have issues with the film (the screenplay is pretty atrocious, not going to lie), but it’s the kind of horror/thriller that you can sit back and enjoy without having to put too much effort into, which is a kind of horror that you do need every once in a while. I have hope that the next installment is going to be good, and I’d actually really love to triple feature this with the other two films we have, since they all, in thier own way, are enjoyable and entertaining.
