Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
Hooptober 1/31 ********************* Saw one of the Spirit Halloween store "Coming Soon" banners and realized we needed to turbocharge this year's list, lest we fall off like every other year. Hooptober often, and early. Hard to imagine a finer, knock-out humdinger of a picture show to start us off. Possibly even a "hoedown, podunk, well them there" kind of siege-based spooktacular, and Billy Zane ain't even the half of it!
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
#40 of 31 Days of Madness: October 2017 (https://boxd.it/1fIvM) A fun splash of outrageous gore and green, beating against the marvelous presence of Billy Zane—seriously, this guy is the best. Despite the cryptkeeper's like-it-or-not humor, the film is never overpowered with its comedy—instead it shapes into a dark and almost exceptional type of fun horror that mostly takes place in one setting, and because of that, it separates itself from the generic movie it could have been. Demon Knight is at its best when surrounded by the hails of demon creatures, intense action, and of course, Billy Zane. Sure, he's the bad guy in the film, but, he's such an explosive presence—funny, mischievous , and strangely scary, this dude is a badass entertainer. The second half is great, while the first isn't so much—but, once the intense horror rolls in, Demon Knight is an undeniable feast of fun, almost perfected by the use of full-blown demon gore and its wicked sense of Billy Zane. 3.7/5
